![]() ![]() It was announced during the PlayStation 4 press conference on 20 February 2013, and, after several delays, was released worldwide in October 2014. I'm not a big fan of that.Is a racing video game developed by Evolution Studios and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for PlayStation 4. ![]() If you take a corner too fast you will slide and you will ruin your time, but not quite to the punishing degree that the Dirt Rally series takes it. It's arcade-y, but it punches hard and it makes you work for it. The driving itself feels fantastic and split-second timing on difficult corners has a real risk/reward satisfaction to it, compounded with the rewind mechanic that gives you less chances as the difficulty increases. It has far too much vibrancy and colour for a game from the 7th gen of consoles. And even now, 12 years later I still think the game is just stunning running at 1440p. Blink and you miss it and you can't really tell if you had fun.ĭiRT 2 was the very first game I purchased for the very first gaming PC that I bought and built with my own hands and money, so maybe it's just nostalgia and rose-tinted glasses, but the series was never able to capture me again like DiRT 2 did. The whole game moves a little too fast, like I'm racing toy cars on small dioramic tracks. The cars feel sticky like it's impossible to spin out at any point in the game even with assists turned off, and too big for the tracks. It feels like there was an attempt to borrow some of DiRT 2's attitude for Dirt 5, but it's all surface level. Previously I created a thread on here called "Don't give me Dirt 5! Give me DiRT 2: 2!" and I still feel that way. Please do give it a watch if this thread resonates with you, too!Īnother game that blew my mind and I also return to frequently is DiRT 2. There is an amazing video by YouTube channel Whitelight released last month that encapsulates how I feel about this game almost perfectly. The dynamic weather system doesn't feel fully baked in to the experience. The driving feels fantastic and I quite like some of the car customisation, but it still feels lacking. I've been playing Project Cars 3 and it almost felt like it began to scratch that itch, but the game feels a bit flat and I struggle to pinpoint why. Truthfully I'm not even much of a car person, but there was just something about DriveClub that clicked. I really don't think I can put it any better than that. They always tend to feel either too clinical in their sim-iness, or too goofy in their arcade-iness. You can probably tell that I adore DriveClub (and yes if I love it so much why don't I marry it?) and it's something that I've never been able to find again in any other racer. A little more than set dressing, a little less than the main focus of the game itself. The game is more than the cars themselves when every track feels like a character of its own. With hardcore handling enabled, the game becomes a complete joy to me, and tilts the game ever so slightly further towards sim than arcade racer. ![]() Everything about the game is crafted with a meticulous hand that clearly cared about balancing everything they could about it - Gameplay, sound, graphics, the feeling of driving. The ultrarealistic weather system and how it completely changes a track. The way that the replay cam focuses partially on your passing car, but predominantly works to capture the scenery around it. Good God.ĭriveclub for me is just as much about the visuals as it is the cars. There's something about Scotland in the rain, Japan in the sun with clear blue skies, Norway at dusk or dawn. I tend to boot it up for 30 minutes, pick a gorgeous A - B track with some moody weather, turn off the music and try to beat my best times. I find it meditative, and honestly I've hardly spent any time in the career mode whatsoever. Tl dr - Any games that feel like DriveClub (or maybe DiRT 2) on PC? Not too simmy or arcade-y with an impeccable focus on environments?ĭriveclub is a game that I still go back to from time to time. ![]()
